“Wonders Without Number”
“There are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen” (John 21:25).
How little in real terms do we know of the earthly lifetime and ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle John tells us that countless volumes of our Savior’s doings would not suffice in telling all. We are given what we need to know, but left with relatively little awareness of “wonders without number” performed in a brief span of several decades (Job 9:10).
The same truth speaks to God’s doings in our lives. What has He done? What is He doing? What will He do? The perpetual actions of an infinite Lord affirmed by Scripture assure us that our Heavenly Father could not begin to reveal more than the merest measure of His working to fulfill in each of our lives “the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Ephesians 3:11). Indeed, in times when it seems little transpires, we would likely be overwhelmed if our Father gave more than a glimpse of His doings on behalf of the glory of Christ, our best interests, and the needs of others He blesses through us. “God… worketh all things after the counsel of His own will” (Ephesians 1:3; 11).
Find the believer most apparently stilled by by circumstance, condition, and situation. We would doubtless be amazed if the Lord opened our eyes to see the wonders He performs in His child’s heart and life. Let us make this personal in our own consideration of the past, present, and future. The great fact of our lives has always been the presence, involvement, and working of God. “In Him we live and move and have our being” declared the Apostle Paul to even those who did not know the Lord Jesus (Acts 17:25). God’s Scripturally stated working in all things tells us that we actually know so very little of His doings. We just know that He is doing them “beyond number.” This is enough for now to guide and enable us in a lifetime wherein “we walk by faith, not by sight” (II Corinthians 5:7). We may see relatively little of the doings of His hand. Scripture, however, bears clear and unmistakable witness to the devotion of our Father’s heart that assures us of the promise precious to every believer…
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.”
(Romans 8:28-29)
Weekly Memory Verse
We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.
