“His Hands"
It is always wonderful to be in good hands. It is far more wonderful to be in nail-pierced Hands.
“I meditate on all Thy works; I muse on the work of Thy hands” (Psalm 143:5).
The Psalmist gratefully pondered the work of God’s hands long before they were nailed to a cross for his eternal salvation. How much more do we have infinitely enhanced opportunity for the wonder of our Lord’s loving devotion to our well being? Indeed, every promise of His caring and care in the Old Testament was written, as it were, by Hands that would one day be impaled. Every promise of the New graces its pages with the bloody ink of a sacrifice long ago offered to make promise regarding every moment of time and eternity:
“He that spared not His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things?” (Romans 8:32).
After His death and resurrection, the Lord Jesus confirmed such grace to His disciples by by a sight they doubtless never forgot. “He showed them His hands and feet” (Luke 24:40). The prints of nails remain on the glorified body of the Lord Jesus, doubtless to forever bear witness of His suffering and death for us. Presently, we cannot see the wounds, save on the pages of Scripture that bear witness of the inestimable cost of our redemption, based on the infinite wonder of “the love of Christ passeth knowledge” (Ephesians 3:19). Thus, we keep our hearts in the pages of the written Word, penned by Hands of the living Word that not only wrote for us, but bled for us.
Let us make this personal. How do we presently need the care of God’s hands? Remembering and affirming their abiding wounds etched upon them by nails goes far in assuring our hearts that our Lord never fails in being and doing what His children require. We can and must completely trust His heart. His hands, His nail pierced hands, tell us this perhaps more assuredly than any other confirmation found on the pages of His Word, written with the ink of His blood. On those sacred pages, may He show us His hands and feet.
“They crucified Him.”
(Matthew 27:35)
“And one shall say unto Him, What are these wounds in Thine hands? Then He shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the house of My friends. Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd, and against the man that is My fellow, saith the Lord of hosts: smite the Shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.”
(Zechariah 13:6-7)
