“Good and Great”
“Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good” (Psalm 135:3).
“The Lord is great, and greatly to be praised” (Psalm 96:4).
Goodness speaks primarily to God’s character and nature, while greatness most often references His power and ability. He is always willing to do that which is best, and He always can.
The order of this glorious synthesis of ability and disposition must be understood and affirmed. Goodness always precedes greatness. Character always guides capability. We learn from I Corinthians that power without probity is “nothing” in us (I Corinthians 13:2). Were such a thing possible in God - and it is not - the same would be true if He moved His hand apart from the directing influence of His heart. He eternally does what He does because He is who He is. “Thou art good, and doest good” declared the Psalmist, a sequence of holiness unalterable in our Lord (Psalm 119:68).
Consider the truth that "God cannot lie” (Titus 1:2). His moral nature is so essentially pristine that it is “impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18). When our Heavenly Father speaks or acts, He cannot utter or perform even the most minute impropriety. “As for God, His way is perfect” (II Samuel 22:31). His character guides His capability. His goodness directs His greatness. Always. Forever. Eternally, and in this moment. “The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works” (Psalm 145:15).
If we have never considered this truth, may our hearts fall to their knees in joy, peace, and wonder. Somebody exists whose nature forever abides in a goodness of such purity that His omnipotent greatness will always operate in the best possible mode and immeasurable measure. That same Somebody made us, redeemed us, and promises to be and do all we will ever need in this life, and forevermore. He will not act otherwise. He cannot act otherwise. Herein lies the safe haven of our hearts, constructed by goodness and greatness. There is none other. We need none other.
“Oh how great is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee, which Thou hast wrought for them that trust in Thee before the sons of men!”
(Psalm 31:19)
“His greatness is unsearchable.”
(Psalm 145:3)
Weekly Memory Verse
There failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.”
(Joshua 21:45).
