“Say Unto My Soul”
“Say unto my soul, “I am thy salvation” (Psalm 35:3).
Of all that salvation in the Lord Jesus Christ may be, He is Himself the very essence of the glorious gift of grace. While certainly we can and must think of our relationship with God in doctrinal and conceptual terms, the realization of the personal nature of His grace as the beating heart of His redeeming work in our lives must be paramount. Our Heavenly Father will be satisfied with nothing less, nor should we.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation” (Psalm 27:1).
The reality of such a gift will be manifested in our experience in ways that align with God’s written Word, even as we experience the wonder of His living and personal Word. “In Thy light shall we see light” (Psalm 36:9). Thus, we do well to echo the Psalmist’s “Say unto my soul” request to know God’s salvation in ways personally tailored to our heart, mind, calling, and circumstance of life. We also do well to expect His answers, and to be amazed by how obvious He will sometimes be in a lifetime wherein “we walk by faith, not by sight” (II Corinthians 5:7). Indeed, I have frequently - and reverently - said to our Father, “Sometimes You work so openly it makes it hard to live by faith!”
This will most often not be the case as we necessarily live our lives in ways that seem ordinary, commonplace, and mundane. Too much open display of God’s heart and hand would presently tempt us to distraction from the living, personal fellowship with Himself for which we exist. Certainly we rejoice in His doings on our behalf, and the encouraging blessing they are when it almost seems we can reach out and touch His garment. However, our Father measures such open manifestation in this present life, knowing how much we require a path of “shining light” that most often must be seen not by our eyes, but by our hearts (Proverbs 4:18).
God made us for living relationship and fellowship with Himself. Such wonder will be known in this present lifetime as “the Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16). Our Father will be personal with us, sometimes in ways so obvious they cannot be mistaken. Most often, however, the personal nature of His presence will be known and affirmed by faith. “Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” We can offer few more important requests, and few answers by our Lord will more prepare us to walk with Him in both spirit and truth. And to respond...
“O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord.”
(Psalm 16:2)
