“Unsearchable”
When giving thanks to our Lord for how immeasurably He provides for our needs - “the unsearchable riches of Christ” - we do well to often remember the untold loss He suffered to make such grace possible (Ephesians 3:8).
“He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from Him; He was despised, and we esteemed Him not. Surely He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and He was afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth: He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He openeth not his mouth” (Isaiah 53:3-7).
God did not and could not have provided for our needs by mere fiat. He could not merely decide to do so, regardless of how much His love for us formed within His heart such desire. Our sins made this an impossibility, and even more, our Lord’s perfect moral character. Atonement had to be made, justice had to be served, and Someone had to suffer, die, and be forsaken for God to supply even one breath to us. Someone did. “Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures” (I Corinthians 15:3). Thus, every breath comes to us at a cost even more unsearchable than the riches it purchased. “Man of sorrows?” This we believe and seek to gratefully remember and appreciate. But more than begin to know what such a solemn title implies? Never. Impossible, both now and forever.
We nevertheless seek to search for the unsearchable. We keep our hearts in passages such as Isaiah’s most holy of prophecies. We prayerfully seek God’s light regarding the darkness our Savior experienced in His redeeming work for us. We remind each other often of the cross that cost the Lord Jesus so much, that God’s grace might provide for us in direct proportion to His loss. Unsearchable riches indeed, purchased by unsearchable pain, sorrow, forsakenness, and death. To the degree that...

Oh the depths of the riches of both the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!
