"The Things That Are Made"
"All things were made by Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made" (John 1:3).
Unless one lives away from cities and towns, we miss much of our Lord's handiwork covered by roads, buildings, and other constructions we deem necessary for our surviving and thriving. There is nothing necessarily wrong with this. However, we do want to realize and remember that God's creative handiwork serves as a vital means of His revelation to us:
"The invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead" (Romans 1:20).
Creation teems with its Creator. From infinitesimally tiny atoms to immensely vast galaxies, all things sound and resound with God's declaration of "I AM," and with His working to confirm the Word He spoke by the worlds He made. He also blessedly formed our senses to perceive His glorious artistic and engineering capabilities in "the things that are made." All creation exists as an altar of worship whereupon opportunity lies before us to sacrifice our native tendency to disregard our Lord's heart, mind, and hand. We rather offer the wonder that may lead to expressed praise and thanksgiving, or at times, we simply still our hearts in awed recognition when words seem inadequate, or even superfluous. "I will speak of the glorious honor of Thy majesty, and of Thy wondrous works…But the Lord is in His holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before Him" (Psalm 147:5; Habakkuk 2:20).
Certainly, it is best when we have opportunity to directly gaze upon the art and engineering of our Creator. However, in our time, incredible photography also presents His glories to be seen. Either way, we must open our eyes to behold beauty and complexity not merely as blessings to our senses, but also as God's revelation of Himself to our hearts and minds. We miss much of a beautiful sunrise, a majestic mountain range, a verdant forest, or the face of a baby if we fail to see the Artist and the Engineer who made all things, and who made our senses to behold them. Yes, "the things that are made" offer blessed opportunity to behold our wondrous Lord with our hearts as we see His doings with our eyes.
"Let Thy work appear unto Thy servants, and Thy glory unto their children. And let the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us."
(Psalm 90:16-17)
Weekly Memory Verse
Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."
(Psalm 139:23-24)
