"Beyond Wonder"
"His greatness is unsearchable" (Psalm 145:3).
How great? How unsearchable? By definition, we will never know. One clue, however, that confirms the immeasurable measure of our Lord is His coordinating direction of all things.
"God… worketh all things after the counsel of His own will" (Ephesians 1:3; 11).
"Things" include all creation, that is, anything that is not God Himself. Angels, the universe, human beings, events, situations, circumstances, thoughts, emotions, words, actions, and the natural occurrences of creation all fit into the "all things" coordinated by God from the moment He made the universe and forevermore. Everything works together to fulfill "the eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Ephesians 3:11). Everything.
If all were spiritually and morally sequential, that is, if our Lord simply willed everything that happens in accordance with His purpose, the coordination of innumerable "things" would be wondrous. However, God fits not only His direct determinations, but also the contrary doings of fallen angels and humans into His purpose in Christ. He does not have to cause in order to coordinate. This makes "wondrous" a most inadequate description of the ways and means of our Lord. He is so wise, so knowing, so understanding, so seeing, so powerful, so present, so involved, so righteous, so holy, and so loving that everything that exists and happens in His creation flows with the current of His ultimate intentions. "For of Him, and through Him, and to Him, are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:36).
The fatalist, if he believes in fate as willed by God, holds a weak and inadequate view of the Lord's nature, character, and ability. He sees a dictator, as opposed to a coordinating Director so great, good, and glorious that He can allow for waywardness He did not dictate to exist and occur in His creation, while being completely unhindered in fulfilling His purpose. Consider that this involves trillions of "things" from creation's ourset, multiplied by trillions and trillions forevermore. All will be coordinated, nothing will be wasted, and God will be forever glorified by a creation utterly astounded and astonished by Him. "For Thou art great, and doest wondrous things, Thou art God alone" (Psalm 86:10).
We must never lose our wonder, and as mentioned, something beyond wonder regarding so glorious a Lord. The truth we consider goes far in maintaining and enhancing amazement, only to be surpassed by consideration of God's character that guides His coordinating capability (a consideration for another time - Psalm 119:68). "All things after the counsel of His own will" speaks not of a dictator, but of a Director and Coordinator good, great, glorious - and completely beyond our full comprehension. Such awareness shines bright light upon and within us, casting us to our faces, and then raising us up to walk in wond… in beyond wonder.
"Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the Lord He is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else."
(Deuteronomy 4:39)
Weekly Memory Verse
He is the Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are judgment, a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.
