The Special of the Day… From the Orange Moon Cafe
"Cannot… Impossible"
The Apostle Paul declared that "God… cannot lie." The writer of Hebrews echoed the blessed truth, affirming that it is "impossible for God to lie" (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18).
"Cannot… Impossible." Not only does our Lord desire to not lie. He literally cannot do so. His communication eternally flows with the current of His character. Thus, Solomon could justifiably command, "Trust the Lord with all thy heart" (Proverbs 3:5; emphasis added). We can cast the entirety of our confidence on God with full assurance that "He that believeth on Him shall not be confounded" (I Peter 2:6). Indeed, no one has ever trusted in the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ and been disappointed for doing so. And no one ever will, to the degree of impossible.
Apply the truth to this day. Whatever it holds and involves, the perfectly faithful Lord of the Bible declares "I am with thee… I will be with thee" (Matthew 28:20; Isaiah 43:2). Moreover, He promises, "I will help thee, I will strengthen thee, I will uphold thee" (Isaiah 41:10). These would be wonderful assurances from a consistently faithful heart and voice. However, from a perfectly faithful Heart and Voice of One who "cannot lie?" Wonderful assurance does not begin to describe the confidence that should fill our spirits with the "peace of God, which passeth all understanding" (Philippians 4:7). Indeed, as blessed as it is to know that regarding His capability, "Nothing shall be impossible," it is every bit as blessed to remember that regarding His character, "It is impossible for God to lie" (Luke 1:37).
Presently, we cannot fully understand the wonder of such a One. Nor will we fully understand the wonder in eternity to come. Born again believers have set forth upon an ocean of faithfulness so pure that we will never fully comprehend God's integrity, virtue, and righteousness. "His greatness is unsearchable" (Psalm 145:3). He confirmed such glory when He kept His promise to redeem us from our sins at the greatest cost to Himself. Yes, the Gospel of the Lord Jesus proclaims a promise kept at the price of torture, blood, sorrow, forsakenness, and death. "Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief" (Isaiah 53:10). How faithful is God? How true is it that He "cannot lie?" Look to Calvary. There, He kept His word by pouring out His wrath on the Word, His beloved Son. Merely a glimpse of the cross in this holy light tells us in no uncertain terms that God can be trusted in this moment, this day, and forevermore because He cannot lie.
"Cannot… impossible" - two of the most blessed words in the Bible. Yes, Someone exists so composed of truth, virtue, and integrity that He can only communicate according to His character of perfection and pristine purity. Moreover, this Someone has made promises to His people regarding every moment of time and eternity, promises that He literally cannot break. No truth more provides and enhances our confidence in the God who so blessedly can, and just as blessedly, cannot.
"God cannot be tempted with evil."
(James 1:13)
"He is the Rock, His work is perfect, for all His ways are judgment, a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He."
