"The Heaven and the Earth"
In the first verse of Scripture, the Lord Jesus Christ appears both directly and in type.
"In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth… In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made" (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-3).
"The Word was made flesh" (John 1:14).
As the Person of the Trinity who would become part of the creation, it comes as no surprise that the Bible would emphasize Christ's role as the Maker of all things. This does not minimize the Father and the Holy Spirit's participation in creation. All three Persons of the triune godhead act in unison regarding all divine doings. Each has a function, however, and the role of the Lord Jesus in creation bears special import because He would become "the Word… made flesh."
Note the typology also. God's first creative act forms "the heaven and the earth." This pointedly and beautifully depicts the very being of Christ. Indeed, since His advent in the womb of Mary, our Lord exists as the God who become man, and the man who remains God. Heaven and earth perfectly unite in the Lord Jesus, an enigma declared by no less than the Apostle Paul as beyond understanding. "Great is the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in the flesh" (I Timothy 3:16). Indeed, of all the miracles performed by our Lord, the reality of God and man united in one glorious Being transcends all. In both Heaven and earth, there is no one and nothing like the Lord Jesus Christ. Not surprisingly, therefore, God's first creative act bore witness to who and what our Savior would become as the miraculous synthesis of God and man, heaven and earth, divinity and humanity.
"Unto the Son He saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever" (Hebrews 1:8).
"Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, He also Himself likewise took part of the same" (Hebrews 2:14).
From Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:20, the Word of God glimmers with the Christ of God. He is veiled in much, particularly in the Old Testament. However, He is there in all. As we open the Bible's pages to seek the Savior, He will be progressively discovered both directly and in type. Who is the Lord Jesus? What has He done? What is He doing? What will He do forevermore for His Father and our benefit? Scripture answers, and as we open the Book, let us be sure to seek its glorious and holy Subject introduced in its initial declaration… "In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth."
"Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me."
(John 5:39)
"He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He might have the preeminence."
(Colossians 1:18)
Weekly Memory Verse
But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ."
(Ephesians 2:13)
