Orange Moon Thursday, August 27, 2026 "Character and Capability"

The Special of the Day… From the Orange Moon Cafe…

“Character and Capability”

Nothing transcends God's infinite capability.  “There is nothing too hard for Thee” (Jeremiah 32:17).  Much, however, lies beyond the scope of His impeccable character.  “God... cannot lie” (Titus 1:2).

Note the Apostle Paul din not not write that God will not lie, which is certainly true.  He rather joins the writer of Hebrews' affirmation of divine truthfulness: “It was impossible for God to lie” (Hebrews 6:18).  Our Lord’s character is so perfectly, pristinely, and purely virtuous that He cannot utter or inspire a word that not accord with truth and reality: The Word of the Lord is right, and all His works are done in truth” (Psalm 33:4).

Someone exists who can be trusted without reserve in this lifetime and forevermore.  Solomon spoke to this when calling God’s people to “trust in the Lord with all thy heart” (Proverbs 3:5; emphasis added).  Such a commitment of faith would be folly, were it not for the existence of a perfectly safe haven of faithfulness upon which we may cast our confidence.  Indeed, we rest our hearts upon God’s can and upon His cannot, the “cannot lie” of an integrity so completely trustworthy that eternity will not fully reveal its infinite virtue.  “Great is Thy faithfulness” declared the prophet in that which would be characterized as an understatement if the Psalmist did not also tell us, “His greatness is unsearchable” (Lamentations 3:23; Psalm 145:3).  Yes, we will venture long upon the infinite sea of divine truthfulness.  Never, however, will we reach a shore that concludes our journey.  “The righteousness of Thy testimonies is everlasting” (Psalm 119:144).

Countless other moral qualities of our Lord’s character preclude Him from thoughts, attitudes, words, and deeds that conflict with His perfect virtue.  His “cannots” tell us as much about who He is as His “cans.”  Born again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ have set forth on an eternal voyage into a Heart of innumerable wonders of God’s capability, whereby “all things are possible” (Mark 10:27).  Of no less import, the “cannots” that pervade God’s character assure us of an eternally safe venture.  He will never lie to us.  He will never act in contradiction to His nature and His Word.  He will never be other than who He is in His perfect integrity.  Every promise He has ever made will come to pass in perfect fulfillment and without fail.  It cannot be otherwise. Because He cannot be otherwise.

“The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works.”

(Psalm 145:17)

Weekly Memory Verse

To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

(Romans 8:6)
