“The Immeasurable Measure”
A noted astrophysicist, an unbeliever, asks with a clearly skeptical voice and intention: “Why did God make two trillion galaxies? (the current estimate by scientists, with most galaxies believed to contain billions of stars and untold multitudes of companion planetary systems).
The Bible answers…
“The invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and godhead” (Romans 1:20).
“His greatness is unsearchable” (Psalm 145:3).
Two trillion galaxies may actually prove to be a drastically low estimate. Indeed, if an infinite, eternal God determines to create in a manner that reflects His being and nature, a universe vast beyond comprehension must spring into existence. “The things that are made” bear witness to the wondrous Lord “whom the heaven, and the heaven of heavens cannot contain” (I Kings 8:27). Thus, as much as a universe of astonishing measure may thrill, fascinate, and amaze us, it can never fully depict the wonder of its Maker and Sustainer.
Born again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ will rightly marvel forever in the variety, complexity, and sheer number of the things God made. Nothing, however, will compare with His person, character, nature, and way. The glories of creation, wondrous as they are, serve as mere reflections of the truth of a goodness and greatness beyond full discovery. “What has God made?” serves as a valid inquiry both now and forevermore. “Who are You, Lord?” far transcends the quest to discover the wonders of His handiwork. Indeed, this question of all questions, the first Paul asked upon meeting the Lord Jesus on the road to Damascus, could rightly accompany every moment of wonder when beholding His doings (Acts 9:5).
The worlds God made tell us who He is in tangible expressions that correlate with His Word, which reveals our Lord in terms of information and inspiration. We must have Scripture in order to intelligently relate to Him: “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17). However, creation also speaks in ways that bear witness to our Lord’s being and doing. Its vastness correlates perfectly, but nevertheless incompletely, with the wonder of who He is. Two trillion galaxies? This actually seems a low estimate in the light of an infinite and eternal Creator, whose glory will forever astound us with its immeasurable measure.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard. Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”
