"The Examination"
Recently, I had what seemed to be a valid Scriptural insight. Upon further reflection, however, I recognized my thoughts to not be faithful to God and His truth, and summarily rejected the supposed insight.
"Try (test) me, and know my thoughts" (Psalm 139:23).
This reminded me of how much I require the Lord's ongoing confirmation and correction of how I view Him and His truth. The same is true of all believers as we live in a world full of both human and demonic entities who seek to lead us astray. We must humbly acknowledge a primary truth about truth, namely, that as long as we live in a fallen world, we remain susceptible to error. Our Heavenly Father's ongoing examination of what we think and how we think comprises a vital aspect of our walk with Him by faith. The Psalmist prayed exactly that:
"Examine me, O Lord" (Psalm 26:2).
We might pray in similar fashion:
"Heavenly Father, thank You for what You have revealed to us of Your self and Your truth. Thank You that You ever work to reveal more, that we might grow in our knowledge of You, our understanding of Your Word, and our walk with You. And thank You that You work to correct us. Our need is great in this present world, and in a life wherein so many seek to lead us astray. You and Your truth are greater than all, however, and we come to You for confirmation, correction, and growth. Examine us, Father, no less than You did the Psalmist long ago."
Our Father doubtless rejoices when we humbly acknowledge our need for reproof and correction of our thinking. Let us rejoice with Him that He loves us enough to not overlook wayward thoughts, which lead to beliefs that hinder our life of faith. I am grateful the Lord examined a notion that seemed plausible upon first consideration, but which did not meet the test of Christ and His truth. Thankfully, He will continue the testing of us all, and may we respond in the willingness to be corrected and rescued from thoughts that may seem worthy, but which do not meet the examination of truth.
"Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me: for Thou art the God of my salvation; on Thee do I wait all the day."
(Psalm 25:5)
Weekly Memory Verse
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!"
(Romans 11:33)
