"Something We Can (Always) Do"
"There is nothing I can do!'
We have all felt it, said it, and mournfully resigned ourselves to the often accurate sense of weakness and lack of opportunity. The truth of the matter, however, is there is always something we can do, a "something" that is, in fact, the main activity for which we exist.
"Trust in the Lord with all thy heart and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
There is always something we can pray. Indeed, God often reserves His most active and proactive working for those times when throwing up our hands in frustration leads to falling to our knees in faith. Do we - can we - do anything more effectual than seeking God's engagement by the marvelous gift of prayer bestowed upon all who trust the Lord Jesus Christ? This does not discount our privileged responsibility to "be ye doers of the Word" whenever opportunity lies before us to engage mind, feet and hands (James 1:22). It does mean that when there is seemingly nothing we can do, there is something we can do. We can seek that which God can do.
How many trillions of divine actions have resulted on occasions when providence stills all but the praying spirits of God's trusting children? Yes, the best we can do is always seeking the best He can do. This often involves actions on our part as our Heavenly Father loves to answer prayers through whoever is doing the praying. However, it often involves only the actions of our hearts in seeking the actions of His hand. Nothing we can do? Never! Something we can pray? Always! The best thing, in fact, and that which would utterly astound and astonish if we could see all our Father does when we refuse to despair at appearances of futility. Such delusion actually signals our front and center engagement at the throne of grace…
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, to obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
(Hebrews 4:16)
What might God do when we can seemingly do nothing, but actually can do so very much? Eternity alone will tell as nothing we can do leads us to the something we can always do…
"Unto Thee lift I up mine eyes, o Thou that dwellest in the heavens."
(Psalm 123:1)
"Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."
(Ephesians 3:20-21)
