"The Wonder of Their (Our) Wedding"

Pen and Ink Edition

"And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there, and both Jesus was called, and His disciples, to the marriage" (John 2:1-2).

Whose wedding?  We do not know.  The Apostle John does not tell us.  We only know that two souls came together with the presence of their very Creator at hand.  Their union, as does every marriage, points to the spiritual bond for which human hearts exist, namely, our spirits united to the Spirit of the Lord Jesus.

"He that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit" (I Corinthians 6:17).  It therefore comes as no surprise that the Lord Jesus would begin His ministry at the beginning of a marriage.

Whoever the couple may have been, we can easily surmise they never forgot the wonder of their wedding, which served as the scene of Christ's presence and working.  Water became wine by His word.  Did the husband and wife think of this when life brought challenges beyond their human capacity to overcome?  Do we as believers in the Lord think of this?  Do we realize and affirm not only our Lord's presence and working, but also the marriage of His Spirit with our own?  Has He drawn that near?  Is He that at hand, and far more, in heart?  Did He change the ordinary into the extraordinary when we believed?  Does He continue such grace throughout our lifetime in countless administrations of the miraculous, some clearly seen, and most so quietly accomplished that we do not even realize they have occurred?

We know the answers.  The unknown couple and the known miracle speak of a salvation that provides the sacred matrimony of our spiritual union with the Spirit of the Lord Jesus.  Our Lord's first miracle is history, intended to bless our personal story with hope and the assurance of His presence and working.  Yes, the Savior's ministry and and miracles began at a wedding.  No surprise at all.  But what a wonder, that that we would become the scene of a far greater union for which we were born, and born again…

"Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying Abba Father."

(Galatians 4:6)

Weekly Memory Verse

For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

(I Corinthians 13:12)
