"Words"

The average adult has a vocabulary of 35,000-40,000 words.  We use this means of conveying thoughts in millions of different combinations, for a multitude of purposes.  Two are primary.

"Men ought always to pray" (Luke 18:1).

"I will speak of the glorious honor of Thy majesty, and of Thy wondrous works" (Psalm 145:5).

Let us settle it once and for all.  We have a tongue first and foremost in order to commune with God, and then to bear witness to the Lord Jesus Christ and His truth (John 1:1).  Of course, we use our capacity to speak for many other reasons.  Or do we?  The truth of the matter is that all our words can reflect well on the Savior and the Scriptures, whether directly or indirectly.

"Let the words of my mouth and the mediations of my heart be acceptable in Thy sight, o Lord, my strength and redeemer" (Psalm 19:14).

In tone, attitude, intent, and content, the Holy Spirit can lead believers to use our tongues rightly, whether we speak directly of the Lord Jesus and the Bible, or exercise speech for its many other uses.  We all know believers whose voices serve as the opportunity for Christ to soar upon the wings of their words, regardless of the subject they address.  The Holy Spirit imparts light and life through such ones, whether they recite the Scriptures and Scriptural truth, or tell of earthly things as if they bear Heavenly significance  (because they do - Ephesians 1:11).

Most of us will speak many words today in prayer to God and in discourse with people.  Every utterance can glorify the Lord Jesus and bless others if we present our tongues to God for His motivation, guidance, and enabling.  The Holy Spirit will bear witness of our Lord's glory when we utter the sacred Name, and also when we speak of other matters.  What we say and how we say it matters in all communication.  Every occasion of speaking offers opportunity for the living Word, the Lord Jesus, to be expressed in our words enlivened by the Spirit of God.  Let us give thanks for so marvelous a capacity, echoing the Apostle Paul who so well knew the reason for our tongues…

"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by Him."

(Colossians 3:17)

Weekly Memory Verse

The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
