"The Womb of the Possible"
"A virgin shall conceive" (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23).
Both Old Testament and New declare that the seemingly impossible would occur - "a virgin shall conceive" (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23). The familiarity of the story may hinder our wonder regarding so glorious and profound a miracle. As the angel Gabriel told Mary when informing her of the child she would bear despite not having known a man, "With God, nothing shall be impossible" (Luke 1:37).
We all have "virgins" in our lives, that is, circumstances, situations, and conditions wherein it appears impossible that Christ could be present, active, and involved. Problems with no apparent solution, relationships that appear beyond repair, needs for which no supply seems available, pains that feel comfortless, and heartaches seemingly beyond balm characterize every person's existence to one measure or another. Wombs abound in this present life wherein nothing of value seems present, particularly and especially "the unsearchable riches of Christ" (Ephesians 3:8).
The Lord Jesus' entrance into the world assures us of possibility wherein only the impossible appears to exist. God specializes in His Son conceived in virgins, laid in mangers, nailed to a cross, and raised from the dead with no fanfare. In this holy light, let us consider the wombs in our lives that seemingly cannot be the scene of the Son. God's greatest working in our lives occurs in venues where it appears He could not be. Indeed, the presence and working of God is currently most often in direct proportion to the appearance of His absence and inactivity. "A virgin shall conceive?" "How could it be?" asks those who see with earthly eyes. "How could it not be?" asks those with eyes directed by the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures to see the impossible as the womb of the possible.
"Look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
(II Corinthians 4:18)
Weekly Memory Verse
But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things."
(John 14:26).
