"The Constant"
Of the innumerable expressions that flow from the essence that "God is love," none more bless us than the glory and truth that "God is faithful" (I John 4:8; I Corinthians 1:9).
If ever in the past we have found Him to be who He is and do what He does, we will find Him the same both now and forevermore. Another blessed trait of His character assures us of this: "God is holy" (Psalm 99:9). Our Lord is forever sanctified to His own nature, meaning He cannot be other than who He is. Thus, the faithfulness of God's love we have known has always been. It is now, and it eternally cannot be otherwise. "Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today, and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).
Circumstances, situations, and conditions constantly change in the present world, sometimes blessedly, and sometimes painfully. In all, we find one abiding constant: "I am the Lord; I change not" (Malachi 3:6). Our Heavenly Father may work in different ways, based on different contingencies. The guiding heart and mind, however, proceed in the sameness of perfect trustworthiness that has been "from everlasting," and will be "to everlasting" (Psalm 90:2). Again, this means that if ever in one moment we have known the sublime glory that "God is faithful," the same holds true in this moment. Whatever the circumstance, situation, or condition, the Constant meets us precisely where we are. The Lord who will not - who cannot - be other than who He is and do other than what He does abides in both blessedness and challenge…
"Thou hast been my help… Thou art my help… the Lord God will help me" (Psalm 63:7; 40:17; Isaiah 50:7).
To praise God that He is love inevitably leads us to praise Him because He is faithful. The fruit of His trustworthiness hangs heavy on the vine of His perfectly unselfish character and nature. Thus, whatever blessedness graces us in this moment, we can thank our Lord for His faithful kindness and generosity. Whatever challenge meets us in this moment, we can trust God for His faithful keeping and "very present help in trouble" (Psalm 46:1). The Constant cannot be otherwise because He is love, and because such beauty of heart and character is faithful.
"Thy faithfulness is unto all generations."
(Psalm 119:90)
Weekly Memory Verse
Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
(I John 4:10)
