"His Laurels"
Born again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ rest on His laurels. But never on our own.
"Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honor, and glory, and blessing" (Revelation 5:12).
"Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14).
By God's grace, the Apostle Paul journeyed far down the path of righteousness. "But not far enough" Paul would have confessed had we commended his faith and faithfulness. This was true during the Apostle's lifetime. It is true now, even as his spirit abides with the Lord in the Heavenlies. It will remain true after Paul receives his glorified body upon Christ's return for His church. The basis for such a never-ending quest lies in the infinite laurels of the Savior…
"His greatness is unsearchable" (Psalm 145:3).
Regardless of how much we "grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," the path that glimmers with His righteousness beckons us to venture ever further (II Peter 3:18). How well do we know Him in living, personal terms? How well in the light of Scripture? "Not well enough" Paul would still testify from Heaven. In fact, those who have gone on to be with the Lord Jesus, while blessedly satisfied in Him and His presence, know far better than do we that an eternal quest of discovery lies before the redeemed regarding the search for a greatness that will never end. "Come and see" beckoned Philip to Nathaniel regarding the Lord Jesus, an invitation the Spirit of God will forever echo to the redeemed (John 1:46).
Who is the Savior? What has He done, what is He doing, and what will He eternally do for His Father, and for us? Let us rejoice in what we have discovered to this point, glorious as it is. Then, let us join Paul in counting not ourselves to have fully apprehended that which can never be completely realized and assimilated. A prayerful heart, an open Bible, and the expectation that our Lord will meet us along the paths of life prepare us to journey a bit further today than we have so far traveled. No end awaits us in the quest to which God graciously calls us. Our Lord's laurels can never be fully appreciated, and Paul would presently testify with even more assurance and joy that regardless of how far one ventures down the path of Christ's righteousness, forever beckons on…
"The love of Christ passeth knowledge."
(Ephesians 3:19)
Weekly Memory Verse
"Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is."
(I John 3:2)
