"The Divine Sequence"
God's character guides His capability. His mind directs His movements. His heart dictates His hand.
"Thou art good, and doest good" (Psalm 119:168).
The Psalmist affirms the divine sequence - Character… Capability - that never changes. "The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and holy in all His works" (Psalm 119:168; 145:17). No truth should more lead us to our knees in wonder, praise, thanksgiving, and the absolute confidence that we can joyfully heed Solomon's directive to "Trust the Lord with all thy heart" (Proverbs 3:5).
This explains the Scriptural teaching of that which an almighty God cannot do.
"God… cannot lie" (Titus 1:2).
"It was impossible for God to lie" (Hebrews 6:18).
"He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment, a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He" (Deuteronomy 32:4).
"There is nothing too hard for Thee" declared the prophet (Jeremiah 32:17). There is much, however, too unholy for the Lord to do. He cannot even be enticed with evil regarding His divine nature, character, and being (James 1:13). Only by becoming human could God the Son be tempted to sin, a truth to be pondered with amazement that the perfectly righteous Lord Jesus Christ would, for our sakes, subject Himself to the possibility of temptation (and would overcome every enticement during an earthly lifetime of constant temptation and constant overcoming - Matthew 4:1-11; Hebrews 4:15). Yes, nothing too hard regarding the capability of God's hand, but much too unholy regarding His character - we do well to establish such sublime truth as an axiom of conviction in our own hearts and minds. Again, He "cannot lie," or do anything that does not meet His standard of perfection. It is "impossible" for Him to do so. His "I AM" ever and forever results in His "I do" (Exodus 3:14; Genesis 9:13).
Such holy purity and devotion to goodness means that we can cast our confidence with complete abandon upon our Heavenly Father. He will always act in perfection of heart and probity of hand. He cannot do otherwise. Writing the words and pondering this blessed truth literally takes my breath away, and reminds me: there is someone - Someone - to trust with every fiber of our being because every fiber of His being flows with the current of a perfectly pure and sparkling river of righteousness. Yes, every thought God ever thinks, every emotion He ever feels, every word He ever speaks, and every action He performs proceeds from the character that originates and eternally perpetuates His capability. Let us again bask in the glory of the Psalmist's most blessed affirmation of the divine sequence: "Thou art good and doest good."
"As for God, His way is perfect."
(II Samuel 22:31)
Weekly Memory Verse
