"The Teacher"
"In matters of Christ and truth, the best students are those who realize that our learning proceeds far more from the quality of the Holy Spirit's teaching ability than from our acumen and diligence as learners."
Through the ages, great teachers have often awakened, inspired, motivated, and empowered poor students to become eager and effective learners.
"I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with Mine eye. Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee" (Psalm 32:8-9).
Regarding matters of the Spirit, we are all poor learners in and of ourselves. "The things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God" (I Corinthians 2:11-12). Every believer requires the aforementioned awakening, inspiration, motivation, and empowering of the Holy Spirit if we are to effectually learn even the most basic truths.
Upon first consideration, this may seem discouraging as we acknowledge our native weakness regarding the knowledge of "the things of God." Further pondering, however, should thrill us as we realize that we live in the abiding presence of the most wondrous of all educators. "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you" (John 14:26). Indeed, in matters of Christ and truth, the best students are those who realize that our learning proceeds far more from the quality of the Holy Spirit's teaching ability than from our acumen and diligence as learners. "Teach me to do Thy will; for Thou art My God. Thy Spirit is good" (Psalm 143:10).
Certainly, believers play a role in applying ourselves as learners, seeking to heed Solomon's wise counsel: "With all thy getting, get understanding" (Proverbs 4:7). We nevertheless emphasize the Holy Spirit's marvelous teaching capabilities as the primary presence and power of our spiritual education. He will be with us always to illuminate our understanding, and we will need Him to be. We do not graduate from God's university of infinite and eternal truth. Nor do we ever perceive ourselves to know any of His reality as well as we could and should (I Corinthians 8:2). The best and the brightest students of His institution of higher learning recognize themselves to have just begun, regardless of how much they have learned. "We beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more" (I Thessalonians 4:1).
The most wondrous of all Teachers calls us to class daily, be it in His Word where the Light of Christ shines so perfectly, or in His world where He walks with us along the pathways of life, leading us to often express with brethren of old, "Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?" (Luke 24:32). Yes, class is in, the Teacher stands before His pupils, and dwells within us to enable our capacity to learn forevermore. And, in this day…
"Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me: for Thou art the God of my salvation; on Thee do I wait all the day."
(Psalm 25:5)
