"The Cold Splash of Truth"
"What is truth?" asked Pilate, who, in personal terms, had the Truth standing right in front of Him. "I am the truth" answered the Lord Jesus Christ (John 18:38; 14:6). In principle, we might say that truth is reality, as it actually is.
As the Lord Jesus inferred, this begins with God Himself, the I AM of all truth and reality. He existed when nothing else existed. Only of our Lord can it be said, "From everlasting to everlasting, Thou art God" (Psalm 90:2). Thus, He exists as the essence of reality, and the originator of all that is real. This includes His creation because what the God of reality makes must, by definition, be real. Thus, we know our Lord as we perceive Him as the heart and heartbeat of truth. Moreover, we know things as they actually are only as we know them in relationship to their Maker and Sustainer. "In Thy light shall we see light" (Psalm 36:9).
This presents great challenge to the human heart and mind. We are all prone to viewing illusion and delusion as truth. Like skilled magicians who deceive their audience into perceiving appearance as substance, our spiritual enemies incessantly manipulate by sleight of hand, and even more, by sleight of heart. Apart from Christ, human beings are easy prey to charlatans that offer truth, while foisting falsehood. Even after we trust the Lord Jesus, our flesh remains prone to grasping for wind and madly racing toward mirages. "If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Matthew 6:23).
Penning these thoughts causes me to realize how much I still succumb to illusion and delusion. Far too often, the cold splash of truth startles me to wakefulness and the realization of faulty perceptions, understandings, and responses. "Lead me in Thy truth, and teach me" wisely prayed the Psalmist (Psalm 25:5). I join him in the request. Perhaps you also sense the need for a more consistent walk in the light of God's reality as it pertains to Himself, and to all other things in our lives. If so, I welcome you as we kneel together in heart, and in the realization of our ongoing challenge to "walk in the light as He is in the light" (I John 1:7). Doubtless, our Heavenly Father will gladly respond, and the reality found only in Him will more brightly illuminate our path as it guides us in the light of His truth.
"Unto the upright there ariseth light in the darkness."
(Psalm 112:4)
"O house of Jacob, come ye and let us walk in the light of the Lord!"
(Isaiah 2:5)
