"The Most Blessed Assurance"
Truth so comprises the essence of who God is that He "cannot lie." Moreover, He cannot lie because He cannot be tempted to lie, and He cannot be tempted to lie because He cannot desire to lie.
"Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed" (Titus 1:2; James 1:13-14).
I once heard a preacher admit he could be tempted with fried chicken if he were on a diet, but not fried chicken livers (I share that predilection!). The lure of enticement by devilish, fleshly, and worldly influences requires desire on the part of the intended prey in order to reel it into its trap. The living God is so pristinely pure in His spiritual and moral being that no trace of such inclination exists. Again, therefore, He cannot be tempted to lie, or to commit any sin whatsoever (**** see note below).
Such truth presents to us the most blessed assurance imaginable. Indeed, Someone exists who can be trusted with all our hearts because He is all faithful. We need never wonder about our Lord and His Word as we seek His promises and commit our trust to His trustworthiness. No one has ever trusted in the God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ and been disappointed for doing so. And no one ever will. His eternal fidelity to His own character and nature means He dwells in the holiness whereby He not only will not lie, but "cannot lie."
"For His promises to you cannot be broken,
and you can stake your life on every word He's ever spoken."
There is somebody - Somebody - to trust today and forevermore. Somebody to thank as the Giver "of every good gift and every perfect gift." Somebody upon whom to cast our cares with perfect assurance they will wing their way to the most caring of Hearts. Somebody to seek who can fill and fulfill us to the very depths of our nature and being. Somebody who is today who He was yesterday, and who will be tomorrow who He is today (James 1:17; I Peter 5:7; Deuteronomy 30:20; Hebrews 13:8). The living and true God of the Bible is this Somebody to whom we can commit the entirety of our hearts and faith. He will not lie. He cannot lie. Yes, let us rejoice in this, the most blessed assurance that no one - no one - has ever trusted in the God and Father of the Lord Jesus and been disappointed for doing so. And no one ever will.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart."
(Proverbs 3:5)
(***Note - the point might be made that the Lord Jesus - God the Son - could be tempted only because He took upon Himself our humanity. He could be enticed by the devil in this earthly aspect of His being, but not in His divinity. To His eternal praise, He never once succumbed to temptation - Hebrews 4:15).
