"Grace In the Wilderness"
God bestows and administers His grace in the beautiful meadows, serene ponds, and shining summits of our lives. He also bestows His freely given favor in the Lord Jesus Christ in venues where we often do not expect to find it.
"The people… found grace in the wilderness" (Jeremiah 31:2).
This prophecy regarding God's ultimate redemption of His earthly people Israel reveals a truth of provision we must anticipate to be displayed in our lives. We often find our Lord of grace in places where we might least expect to discover Him. "A table in the wilderness" presents itself to our hearts as we trust Him in the challenges of life (Psalm 78:19). Indeed, we often feast best where famine seems to reign. This does not happen automatically. Again, we must trust our Lord and submit to His purposes if we are to partake of the Bread of life where by all appearances, we would expect to starve. "I will feed My flock" promises the Good, Great, and Chief Shepherd, often in green pastures, but sometimes in a barren wilderness (Psalm 23:2; Ezekiel 34:15).
Let us make this personal, pointed, and to the moment. This moment. In what present "wilderness" might we find our Heavenly Father's good grace in the Lord Jesus? In what seemingly barren difficulty, problem, pain, heartache, or heartbreak might a table furnished with grace await us? What cross serves as the means whereby we will partake of the risen Christ that no other table could provide? Our faith began at Calvary, where our Savior experienced starvation of spirit and soul so that He might forever serve as our provision of bread, the Bread of life. Thus, we may find His table in the wilderness for our own spirits and souls. Moreover, in the wonder of our Heavenly Father's grace in our present existence, we may feast there more bountifully than we often do in the green pastures.
