Orange Moon "Words"

The Special of the Day… From the Orange Moon Cafe…

   "Words"

How important words must be!  "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1).  Scripture identifies the second Person of the triune godhead, the Lord Jesus Christ, as the Word.

How important words must be!  "All things were made by Him (the Word), and without Him was not anything made that was made" (John 1:3).  The Creator of all things is the One declared to be the Word. Moreover, "by the word of the Lord were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth" (Psalm 33:6).

How important words must be!  "Upholding all things by the word of His power" (Hebrews 1:3).  By God's word, all things in creation consist and continue to be.

How important words must be!  "Never man spake like this man!" (John 7:46).  "The Word was made flesh" and of all things He did during His earthly lifetime, the Lord Jesus uttered words unlike any spoken by a human tongue before or since (John 1:14).

How important words must be!  "If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved" (Romans 10:9-10).  We enter into saving relationship with God by the faith that includes confession with our mouths because "out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaketh" (Matthew 12:34).  If the Word dwells within us, it will come forth from our tongues.

How important words must be!  "The prayer of the upright is His delight" (Micah 7:18).  As we speak to God in our hearts and with our spoken words, we possess the wondrous capacity to bring emotional delight to our infinite and eternal Creator.  "The Lord taketh pleasure in His people" (Psalm 149:4).

How important words must be!  "Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and Thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by Thy name, O LORD God of hosts" (Jeremiah 15:16).  Words, God's words, offer and supply the purest joy our hearts can know as He reveals Himself and His glory though the living Word, the Lord Jesus, the written Word, the Bible, and the words God's Spirit leads us to speak to others, and hear from others.

How important words must be!  "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21).  We live or die in accordance with the words we think and speak.  Our actions proceed from truths or falsehoods we ponder and utter, even as James refers to our tongues as a rudder quite small, but nevertheless profoundly influential (James 3:4).

How important words must be!  We influence others by our words, whether for good or ill.  "Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers" (Ephesians 4:29).  Think of it: in this day, our words can be our Lord's means of conveying His freely given favor in the Lord Jesus to others.  Yes, our tongues, too often used for destruction, can through Christ "minister grace unto the hearers."  May it be so!

How important words must be!  "Behold, I will pour out My Spirit unto you, I will make known My words unto you" (Proverbs 1:23).  By His Spirit's illumination and communication of His words, our Lord communes with us, revealing and confirming the glory of the Psalmist's exaltation: "In Thy presence is fulness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures forevermore" (Psalm 16:11).

How important words must be!  So important that we will never fully know their glorious and vital significance.  However, we can discover more and more the life and death that proceeds from words, first, from God's words, and then, from the words we choose to think and speak in response to Him.  A final thought: one of my favorite Scriptural illuminations involves the truth that our Heavenly Father thinks not only with His mind, but also His heart.  "The counsel of the Lord standeth forever, the thoughts of His heart to all generations" (Psalm 33:11).  Little wonder that such beauty proceeds from His living Word and His written Word as His beautiful heart thinks and then speaks of glories in His Son more wonderful than even eternity will fully unveil.  Yes, in this day and forevermore, how important words must be!

"Quicken me after Thy lovingkindness; so shall I keep the testimony of Thy mouth.  Forever, O LORD, Thy word is settled in heaven."

(Psalm 119:88-89)

Weekly Memory Verse

If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin.

(I John 1:7)
