"Like Him" - Part 4

"As He Trusted"

To be more and more like the Lord Jesus Christ in our character, nature, and way, we must be more like Him regarding how He lived such a life of faith and faithfulness.

"Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do: for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise" (John 5:19).

"The Father that dwelleth in Me, He doeth the works" (John 14:10).

"I live by the Father" (John 6:57).

Perhaps the most important (and empowering) way we "walk, even as He walked" involves our being like the Lord Jesus in trusting and submitting to His Father (I John 2:6).  While perfectly Divine as God the Son, our Savior lived as a dependent human being during His earthly lifetime.

"My Father worketh hitherto, and I work" (John 5:17).

This affirmation directly correlates with the Apostle Paul's description regarding the works of born again believers being sourced and executed by God's works: "Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.  For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of His good pleasure" (Philippians 2:12-13).  Our Heavenly Father calls us to the same dependence as practiced by the Lord Jesus, thus leading to the same life of works we attribute to God's working in us.  Indeed, faith and obedience are fruits of the Holy Spirit's presence and working in us (Galatians 5:22).  We do not and cannot originate a godly life.  We do, however, respond to the truth that Christ lives in us so that we may live through Him.  We submit to God's glory and will in confidence of His working in us to fulfill such a glorious purpose. Thereby we follow the Lord Jesus' example of a human life lived by the power of Divine life.

Our Savior lived by faith.  He now lives in all who believe to empower the same dependence and submission to the Father.  As in most of His earthly lifetime, God's works will be quietly fulfilled in a manner that brings honor to Him only.  But they will be fulfilled through Christ as we "walk even as He walked" because we more and more learn to trust even as He trusted.

"Though ye believe not Me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."

(John 10:38)

"In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him."

(I John 4:9)

Weekly Memory Verse

Beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, we are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord."

(II Corinthians 3:18)
