The Special of the Day… From the Orange Moon Cafe
"This Mutual Devotion"
"Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."
The beloved old hymn bears witness to born again believers in the Lord Jesus Christ rejoicing in Him as the living Word of God, and in the Bible as the written Word of God.
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:1; 14).
"I rejoice at Thy Word, as one that findeth great spoil" (Psalm 119:62).
To love and trust the Lord Jesus means to love and trust the Scriptures. To love and trust the Scriptures means to love and trust the Lord Jesus. Indeed, the more we personally grow in devotion to the Savior, the more we join Him in commitment to the written Word of God. The more we "find great spoil" in the Bible, the more we find the great Savior it so beautifully and glorious proclaims. Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.
He who declared Himself to be the truth also affirmed the Scriptures as truth (John 14:6; 17:17). The former is personal; the latter propositional. As beings of heart and mind, we require both aspects of the Word of God. Believers know Him. "The Spirit Himself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God" (Romans 8:16). We also understand His truth. "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105). We must ever seek to grow in such personal devotion and propositional comprehension. Walking with our Lord in His love leads us to the Scriptures as our lamp and light. The Bible's illumination leads us to the Savior as the heart of God's eternal purpose, and the eternal life of our hearts. The living Word and the written Word. The Savior and the Scriptures. Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.
The Bible is Christ in print. Christ is the Bible personified. Believers must bear this mutual devotion in our hearts and minds. One cannot love the Lord Jesus without loving the Scriptures. Nor can one love the Scriptures without loving the Lord Jesus. We were made for both glories to illuminate our being as those who both know and understand. The hymnwriter blessedly expressed the Who and the What we must discover in ever greater measure as the Word of God shines upon us in both life and light. We will find the Savior on the pages of Scripture. We will find the Scriptures in the person of the Savior. Yes, Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so.
"Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me."
(John 5:39)
"Consider how I love Thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to Thy lovingkindness."
(Psalm 119:159)
Weekly Memory Verse
I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men, for kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty."
(I Timothy 2:1-2).
