   "His Delight"

 

Part 1

 

   We often return in these messages to the theme of God's enjoyment in the prayers of His trusting children in Christ:

 

   "The prayer of the upright is His delight" (Proverbs 15:8).

 

    Of the many reasons Scripture calls us to pray, I believe this to be the most motivating and empowering.  Note that our Heavenly Father does not simply desire us to pray.  He rather delights in our communion with Him.  Any Christian who knows and remembers this truth cannot help but be affected by it in the most blessed way.  Indeed, it is one thing to consider the blessing prayer is to us.  That an infinite and eternal God calls us to communion with Himself, and made such fellowship possible by the agonized death of His Son, is a glorious thing.  How can we not ourselves enjoy the privileged wonder of such grace?  However, it is another thing altogether to ponder our Father's literal delight in our presence and the expression of our hearts to Him.  As the beautiful Christmas carol inquires in sublime bewilderment, "What wondrous love is this?"

 

    What wondrous love indeed.  "Sweet is thy voice" our Lord would say to us (Song of Solomon 2:14).  Again, no believer can fail to be profoundly affected and motivated by the remembrance of how much we each mean to the heart of God.  We may often not feel like praying.  The world, the devil, and the flesh resists our fellowship with the Lord, and we feel it.  However, when we recall that how we feel about prayer is not our primary motivation, approaching the throne of grace becomes an altogether different and more desired matter.  What if in this moment we can bring delight to the heart of God by drawing our own hearts near to Him with offerings of praise, thanksgiving, consecration, intercession, and request?  What if we can please the Heart we have too often displeased?  And what if our humble, trusting approach through Christ is met by pleasure in the very being of God?  When such truth is planted deeply within our hearts and nurtured by the truth of Scripture and the grace of the Spirit, we will come.  Because nothing more draws us near to God's throne than the realization of His delight in our approach and our presence…

 

"The Lord taketh pleasure in His people."
